Equine Therapy
Recognized as a viable resource for veterans working to overcome post-traumatic stress, equine-assisted activities and therapies (EAAT) provide unique benefits not found in other traditional treatments. Time with horses may ease the challenges of PTS(D) by improving sleep, reducing anxiety, creating confidence, and providing a sense of peace.
Why Horses?
Humans and horses share a long history and a special relationship. Horses bring a unique skill set to our lives.
Horses are prey animals. They live in a state of hyper-vigilance, similar to veterans with PTS(D). This creates a common ground for veterans & horses.
Horses do not judge. They don’t care where you’ve been or what you’ve done. They’ll listen without judgement.
Horses give immediate feedback. You’ll know if you have pushed too hard and need to reduce the pressure.
Horses mirror humans. Horses are aware of our emotions and reactions, and they reflect those back to us.
Horses provide a point of focus. With a 1,000 lb. animal, you need to put all other thoughts away and be focused, pay attention, be in the moment.
Horses provide physical exercise. Riding, groundwork or just the process of grooming and cleaning the hooves can be a workout.
Horses allow you to regain a sense of empowerment. Working and partnering with a horse can provide a sense of control when your world may seem out of control.
Equines for the Front Lines
Located in north central Texas, Equines for the Front Lines welcomes any veteran, regardless of the conflict or circumstances, to participate. There is no charge, no obligation, and no prior horse experience needed.
Peer-to-peer support - Sometimes you need to connect with those people “who understand.” The shared experience of veterans is a powerful bond. Through the train the trainer program, veterans learn to teach lessons and activities, as well as provide moral and physical support to other veterans.
Equines for the Front Lines provides the sanctuary where “Thank you for your service” is sincere. It offers an environment of safety and relaxation in a small group setting. Veterans participate in a variety of activities and experiences with the horses. The program includes time for fellowship with other veterans, horsemanship presentations, and hands-on demonstrations. Veterans work with the horses on the ground and in the saddle. Off-site trips to local equine professionals and facilities provide additional experiences.
